A new report has revealed that 28 states across Nigeria are yet to settle a combined ₦626.81 billion owed to retirees in unpaid pensions and gratuities.
The findings highlight the growing financial burden on pensioners who have served the nation but continue to face delays in receiving their entitlements. Many affected retirees say the backlog of payments has caused severe hardship, with some unable to afford basic living expenses or healthcare.
Labour unions and pensioners’ associations have called on the state governments to prioritize the clearance of outstanding obligations, stressing that the delay violates the rights and welfare of senior citizens.
Analysts have urged the Federal Government to enforce stricter fiscal accountability measures to ensure that pension funds are properly disbursed and managed at the state level.
