The Federal High Court sitting in Kaduna has granted bail to former Kaduna State governor, Nasir el-Rufai, in the sum of N200 million over allegations bordering on money laundering and fraud.
Justice Rilwani Aikawa delivered the ruling on Tuesday, approving the bail application after hearing arguments from both the defence and prosecution. The court also outlined conditions attached to the bail, which are expected to ensure the former governor’s availability for trial.
The case stems from a petition and subsequent investigation by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), which, on March 24, formally filed charges accusing el-Rufai of financial misconduct. The anti-corruption agency alleged that the former governor was involved in transactions that contravened Nigeria’s financial regulations.
According to court proceedings, the prosecution argued that the charges are backed by substantial evidence, urging the court to impose strict bail conditions. However, el-Rufai’s legal team maintained his innocence, insisting that the allegations are unfounded and politically motivated.
In a related development, another judge handling a connected matter adjourned the bail hearing to April 21, 2026, to allow for further review of submissions and documentation presented by both parties.
Legal analysts say the developments mark a significant phase in the high-profile case, which has drawn national attention due to el-Rufai’s political stature and influence.
The matter has been adjourned for continuation of hearing, as the court is expected to determine the substantive issues surrounding the allegations in the coming weeks.
