Lamine Yamal is drawing motivation from global sports icons LeBron James and Neymar as FC Barcelona prepare for a crucial UEFA Champions League quarter-final second leg clash against Atletico Madrid.
Barcelona head into the encounter needing to overturn a 2-0 deficit from the first leg, and the teenage forward is banking on the spirit of remarkable comebacks to fuel his performance.
Yamal recently updated his Instagram profile picture to an image of LeBron James celebrating the NBA Finals 2016 triumph with the Cleveland Cavaliers, where they famously came back from a 3-1 series deficit to defeat the Golden State Warriors.
“He’s one of the figures who can inspire me for this match,” Yamal said. “I’ll think about how he did it, and hopefully it works out the same for me.”
The 18-year-old also paid tribute to his long-time idol Neymar, recalling Barcelona’s historic 6-1 comeback against Paris Saint-Germain in the 2017 Champions League round of 16 — a match he has watched multiple times.
“Neymar is a player who was very important for me during my childhood. He’s my idol,” Yamal said. “I’ll always be grateful for everything he’s given to football.”
Yamal further expressed hope that Neymar, now playing for Santos FC, will make Brazil national football team squad for the upcoming World Cup, despite being left out of recent selections by coach Carlo Ancelotti.
“He inspires everyone,” Yamal added. “He’s the type of player you’d pay to watch. Hopefully, he will be at the World Cup.”
With history and inspiration on his side, Yamal will be hoping to lead Barcelona to another unforgettable European comeback.
