Ugandan President’s Son Deletes X Account Following Outcry Over Threat to ‘Behead’ Opposition Leader Bobi Wine

Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the son of Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni, has announced his decision to quit X (formerly Twitter) following a series of controversial remarks, including a threat to “cut off” the head of opposition leader Bobi Wine. The statement, which he later claimed was a joke, sparked outrage among opposition supporters and heightened scrutiny of his political ambitions.

The 50-year-old general, whose online presence has frequently drawn criticism, declared on Friday that it was “time to leave and concentrate” on his military duties. However, Kainerugaba hinted at a potential return, pledging to “re-converge” with his one million followers in the future.

This latest incident marks yet another chapter in Kainerugaba’s contentious history on social media. In 2022, he temporarily left the platform after posting inflammatory remarks, including threats to invade Kenya—comments that forced his father to issue a public apology. Despite his claims of humor or misinterpretation, Kainerugaba’s statements have repeatedly raised concerns about his judgment and suitability for leadership.

In his farewell message, Kainerugaba attributed his decision to guidance from his faith, stating, “It is on the instructions and blessings of my Lord Jesus Christ that I leave this social media and dedicate myself to my assignment to bring peace and security to our region.”

While Kainerugaba’s social media activity has been a source of controversy, it has also fueled speculation about his political future. Many observers view him as a likely successor to his father, despite President Museveni’s denials of any succession plan. The general’s nationwide campaigns and public mobilizations have only added to these speculations, with critics accusing him of using his position to prepare for a presidential bid.

Kainerugaba’s outspoken remarks on various geopolitical issues, including his support for Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and commentary on Ethiopia’s civil war, have also drawn international condemnation. These incidents have strained Uganda’s diplomatic relations and further complicated his public image.

The threat directed at Bobi Wine, a former musician turned politician and a staunch critic of Museveni’s regime, has escalated tensions in Uganda’s political landscape. Bobi Wine, whose real name is Robert Kyagulanyi, has called for accountability over the remarks, emphasizing that such threats are not to be taken lightly.

As Kainerugaba steps away from the platform, questions remain about his next move and whether this departure signifies a shift in his approach to public engagement or merely a temporary retreat. Either way, his resignation from X has reignited debates about his role in Uganda’s political and military spheres, leaving the nation and international observers watching closely.
