Obasanjo Regrets Nigerian Civil War, Says Nigerians Should Never Have Fought Themselves
Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo has expressed regret over the Nigerian Civil War, saying Nigerian soldiers and Biafran fighters should never have gone to war against one another.
Speaking in Abeokuta on Monday, the former military commander described the 1967–1970 conflict as a painful chapter in the nation’s history, stressing that civil wars are tragic because they force citizens to fight their own brothers.
Obasanjo noted that unlike battles against foreign enemies, civil conflicts should focus on reconciliation, peace, and national unity rather than destruction. He urged Nigerians to embrace dialogue, understanding, and unity to avoid another national crisis.
