Plateau State has recorded the highest number of rape and defilement cases in Nigeria for the first quarter of 2026, according to figures compiled by the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies.
Despite legal frameworks such as the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Act, sexual violence continues to surge nationwide. Authorities say cases are being documented and prosecuted in collaboration with institutions including the National Human Rights Commission, Ministries of Justice, and civil society groups.
Data from January to March show that Plateau State recorded the highest number of incidents, with at least 64 reported cases within the period. The State Commissioner of Police, Bassey Ewah, described the trend as deeply troubling, warning that rape-related offences now make up a significant portion of reported crimes.
Speaking in Jos, the police chief likened the situation to an “epidemic,” citing disturbing cases involving minors and even relatives. He disclosed that some incidents involved family members, raising serious concerns about safety within homes.
The Command said it has intensified operations to track down offenders, directing Divisional Police Officers to prioritise cases of sexual violence. Parents and guardians were also urged to remain vigilant and ensure closer supervision of children.
Security agencies reiterated their commitment to ensuring justice for victims while calling for stronger community awareness and cooperation to curb the rising trend.
The development has renewed calls for stricter enforcement of existing laws and broader preventive measures to address sexual violence across Nigeria.
