Dotun Oladipo: Rasheed Bolarinwa Pays Emotional Tribute to Late Journalist, Media Entrepreneur

LAGOS, Nigeria — Nigeria’s media industry has lost a distinguished journalist, media entrepreneur and advocate of ethical journalism, Dotun Oladipo, with his former colleague and friend, Rasheed Bolarinwa, describing his death as a profound personal and professional loss.
In a tribute titled “The Dotun Oladipo I Knew,” Bolarinwa recalled his decades-long relationship with Oladipo, which began in the late 1990s when both worked at The Punch newspapers.
According to Bolarinwa, Oladipo distinguished himself early in his career as a calm, principled journalist who was deeply committed to responsible journalism and the public interest.
He said their friendship remained strong even after they moved into different areas of the communications industry, with Oladipo later founding The EagleOnline and becoming President of the Guild of Corporate Online Publishers (GOCOP).
Bolarinwa, who served as President of the Association of Corporate Communication & Marketing Professionals in Banks (ACAMB), said his relationship with Oladipo became particularly significant as both organisations sought to promote professionalism, credibility and ethical standards in the media and corporate sectors.
He described Oladipo as a voice of reason who often helped resolve tensions during media crises, particularly when misinformation and false claims threatened relationships between the banking industry and the media.
“He understood the power of journalism, but equally appreciated the responsibility that came with it,” Bolarinwa said, recalling how Oladipo quietly intervened on several occasions to promote understanding during difficult situations.
Bolarinwa also remembered visiting Oladipo at The EagleOnline office in Ogba, Lagos, where the late journalist personally showed him around the premises and introduced him to members of his team.
He recalled meeting Oladipo’s wife during the visit, describing the experience as a glimpse into the personality of a devoted family man and warm host behind the public figure.
According to Bolarinwa, Oladipo consistently advocated for journalists and credible media organisations during GOCOP conferences, encouraging corporate organisations to maintain relationships with reputable media partners.
He also recalled celebrating Oladipo’s 50th birthday with him and his circle of friends in Lagos six years ago, noting that they remained in contact through conferences, seminars and other industry events.
Bolarinwa said he frequently sought Oladipo’s advice on media-related matters because of his extensive professional network and deep understanding of journalism.
“Not once did he decline a request for guidance or intervention. He was generous with his time, wisdom, and relationships,” he said.
Bolarinwa described Oladipo’s death as the loss of not only a former colleague but also a trusted ally, comrade and brother.
He expressed condolences to Oladipo’s wife and children, his brother Tunde, the GOCOP family and the wider Nigerian media community.
“Dotun Oladipo lived a life of impact, friendship, service, and integrity. His footprints are indelible, his legacy enduring, and his memory will remain a source of inspiration to all who had the privilege of knowing him,” Bolarinwa said.
He prayed that the late journalist’s soul would rest in perfect peace.
