Acting National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Umar Damagum, has called on former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, ex-Senate President David Mark, and other members of the breakaway faction to return to the party, assuring that internal conflicts have been resolved and the PDP is now stronger and more united.
Speaking at the PDP National Secretariat in Abuja on Wednesday, Damagum made the appeal shortly after presiding over the National Working Committee (NWC) meeting—the first since the party’s recent crisis. He emphasized that the PDP has reconciled its differences and is prepared for the challenges ahead, especially the 2027 general elections.
“The PDP is now more united than ever before,” Damagum declared. “To the APC, I say this: continue to harass and buy our members, but the 2027 election will be between Nigerians and your party.”
The appeal comes amid reports that the Atiku-led faction is considering adopting the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as its new political platform in collaboration with a broader opposition coalition.
Key party leaders present at the NWC meeting included Deputy National Chairman (South) Taofeek Arapaja, National Publicity Secretary Debo Ologunagba, Deputy National Chairman (South-East) Ali Odefa, and National Secretary Samuel Anyanwu.
Damagum confirmed that the next National Executive Committee (NEC) meetings, previously proposed for July 23, 24, and 25, will proceed as scheduled, reflecting renewed internal cohesion.
He further criticized the state of the nation, citing rising hunger and insecurity, and urged political leaders to adopt people-focused policies.
“We are not conquered. We are law-abiding citizens who deserve to be heard,” Damagum stated. “For democracy to thrive, people must speak freely, and leadership must be responsive to the needs of the people. This is the vision our party stands for.”
With unity restored, the PDP appears poised to strengthen its base and reposition itself as a formidable force ahead of the 2027 elections.
