The Supreme Court of Nigeria has indefinitely postponed its final judgment in the highly contested Edo State governorship election dispute involving Senator Monday Obekpolo and Asue Ighodalo of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Justice Garba Lawal, who presided over the case, announced that the court would set a new date for the ruling after all legal submissions and arguments from both parties had been fully reviewed.
Asue Ighodalo, represented by his lead counsel Ken Mosia, SAN, urged the apex court to nullify Obekpolo’s declared victory and recognize him (Ighodalo) as the lawful winner of the 2024 Edo governorship election. Ighodalo claimed he garnered the majority of valid votes cast and should therefore be declared the legitimate governor-elect.
The indefinite adjournment has intensified political tension in Edo State, as citizens and stakeholders await the Supreme Court’s final decision in the high-stakes electoral battle.
