The Lagos State Environmental and Special Offences Unit has arrested 50 suspected hoodlums during a statewide enforcement operation aimed at ensuring compliance with the monthly environmental sanitation exercise.

Chairman of the agency, Adetayo Akerele, disclosed that the arrests were made across multiple locations known for recurring environmental violations. These areas include Ikeja, Iyana-Ipaja, Abule-Egba, Agege, Iyana-Oworo, Lagos Island, Lekki–Ajah Expressway, Ijora Causeway, Ijora Underbridge, and Iddo.

In a statement issued by the agency’s spokesperson, Abdulraheem Gbadeyan, the Taskforce noted that while many residents complied with movement restrictions and sanitation guidelines, some individuals failed to participate fully in the exercise.

During a related operation, another 50 suspects were apprehended along the Lekki–Epe Expressway for activities deemed disruptive to public order during the sanitation period. Authorities also linked some of the suspects to acts that endangered public infrastructure, including damage to billboards and road signs.

Akerele emphasized that all arrested individuals would be prosecuted in accordance with the Lagos State Environmental Protection Law, 2017.

He explained that the sanitation initiative is designed to tackle issues such as indiscriminate waste disposal, open defecation, street trading, and other environmental infractions.

Reiterating the government’s firm stance, the chairman stressed that enforcement efforts would continue, urging residents—especially youths—to avoid activities like street football during sanitation hours and instead contribute to maintaining a cleaner environment.

The Taskforce maintained that sustained compliance and public cooperation remain vital to achieving a safer, more orderly, and livable Lagos.
