Operatives of the Ogun State Police Command have arrested the leader of a violent robbery gang that has been terrorizing communities in Ifo Local Government Area and neighboring parts of the state.
The suspect, 32-year-old Lekan Anuoluwapo, and his female companion, 33-year-old Ajoke Kareem, were apprehended around 12:40 a.m. on Saturday in the Oloshe area following a coordinated police operation.
Police Public Relations Officer Omolola Odutola, confirmed the arrest in a statement, noting that the gang had been responsible for a series of armed robberies across Agosi, Old Bank Area, Olomu Road, Oju-Sango, Folam, Oloshe Road, Ikorita, and Ajowa communities.
According to Odutola, the syndicate was involved in multiple violent attacks, including an incident in which a resident was shot in the chest and robbed of personal belongings.
She explained, “Two major cases have been directly traced to the syndicate. On October 17, 2025, around 6:30 a.m., two armed men attacked a woman cleaning her church premises and dispossessed her of a handbag containing cash. One Wale Adeleye, later arrested, confessed to carrying out the operation with Lekan Anuoluwapo using a locally made pistol.”
“In another attack on October 25, at about 3:00 a.m., the gang invaded a residence, stealing valuables such as an Infinix phone, a POS machine, and a power bank. The victim, who attempted to raise the alarm, was shot in the chest. The robbers fled, abandoning their weapon — a locally fabricated pistol with an empty shell.”
During interrogation, Anuoluwapo reportedly named 36-year-old Akpomoka Gabriel, also known as Akuru, of Ogba-Iyo, Ijoko-Ota, as his key accomplice. Gabriel was subsequently arrested by police operatives.
The arrest, Odutola said, sparked widespread celebration among residents of Ijoko and Ogba-Iyo, who expressed relief that the long-feared gang had finally been dismantled.
Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police, Lanre Ogunlowo, commended the officers involved for their professionalism and directed that the suspects be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further investigation and prosecution.
He also ordered area commanders in Sango-Ota and Ifo to tighten patrol operations and maintain heightened security across identified flashpoints during the “Ember months” to prevent further criminal activities.
