“I Will Restore Fuel Subsidy If Elected President” — Sowore Tells Nigerians
African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has promised to reinstate fuel subsidies if elected President of Nigeria, arguing that the policy itself is not necessarily harmful but becomes problematic when poorly managed.
Sowore said a future administration under his leadership would reconsider the removal of petrol subsidies and introduce a system designed to protect Nigerians from excessive increases in the cost of energy and transportation.
The presidential hopeful also criticised the Federal Government’s current economic policies, arguing that the removal of the subsidy has contributed to worsening economic pressure on households and businesses.
According to him, the sharp depreciation of the naira, combined with rising fuel costs, has increased the financial burden on Nigerians and made basic necessities increasingly difficult for many families to afford.
Sowore maintained that the debate should not focus solely on whether subsidies should exist, but on how such interventions are designed, funded and administered to ensure that public resources benefit ordinary citizens rather than being diverted through corruption and inefficiency.
He also called for a broader economic strategy focused on tackling poverty and food insecurity, saying government policies should directly improve the living conditions of Nigerians.
The AAC candidate’s position places him at odds with the current administration’s approach to fuel subsidy removal, which has been defended by the government as necessary to reduce fiscal pressure and redirect public funds towards development.
Sowore’s promise to restore the subsidy is therefore likely to become a major part of his economic message as political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
