ISWAP: Ba’a Shuwa Rejects Leadership Role After Mainok’s Death in Joint Nigeria–US Strike
Fresh intelligence reports suggest that a leadership reshuffle within the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) has hit a setback after senior commander Ba’a Shuwa reportedly declined an appointment following the death of veteran militant Abubakar Mainok in a joint Nigeria–United States counterterrorism operation in the Lake Chad Basin.
Security sources say the strike, which targeted high-value insurgent figures, created a leadership vacuum that prompted the central command of ISIS to push for a replacement within its West Africa affiliate.
However, reports indicate that Ba’a Shuwa has been reluctant to accept the proposed role, allegedly due to increased pressure from ongoing intelligence-led airstrikes and military operations targeting insurgent commanders in the region.
Authorities continue to intensify operations across the Lake Chad axis as part of efforts to dismantle terrorist networks operating in Nigeria and neighbouring countries.
