Abia Govt Moves to Prosecute Landlord, Tenants Over 100 Bags of Sewage Discovered in Aba Building
The Abia State Government has moved to prosecute the landlord and tenants of a building in Aba after environmental officials discovered more than 100 bags allegedly containing human sewage at the property.
The Deputy General Manager of the Abia State Environmental Protection Agency (ASEPA), Aba Zone, Okezie Ezengwa, disclosed this in a statement concerning the discovery.
According to Ezengwa, the landlord and tenants of the building have been invited by the agency but reportedly went into hiding following the discovery.
He, however, assured that the suspects would be apprehended and prosecuted for the alleged environmental offence.
The affected property, located at No. 16 Ibadan Street, Aba, has also been sealed by ASEPA through a court order.
Ezengwa further disclosed that four nursing mothers were found inside the building on August 14, 2026, when ASEPA officials uncovered the alleged environmental nuisance.
He said the babies with the women were between two weeks and four months old.
The ASEPA official condemned the alleged practice, describing the discovery as a serious environmental threat.
He also raised concerns over the increasing threats and physical attacks allegedly faced by ASEPA monitoring teams while carrying out enforcement activities in Aba.
“We commend the intelligence and commitment of our monitoring members who discovered this grave nuisance and have not relented in their duties, even in the face of threats to life, numerous physical assaults and grave injuries from angry environmental offenders,” Ezengwa stated.
The state government’s action is expected to reinforce its efforts to curb improper waste disposal and other environmental violations across Abia State.
