Plateau Crisis: Berom Youths Condemn Renewed Attack in Riyom, Demand Firm Action from Security Forces

The Berom Youths Moulder Association (BYM) has condemned the latest attack on Kwi community in Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State, where at least seven people were killed and several others injured in what they described as an unprovoked assault by suspected Fulani militants.
According to reports, the incident occurred around 10:30 p.m. on Saturday, shortly after the killing of one Kurang Daniel, who was shot dead earlier in the day while working on his farm.
In a statement released on Sunday, signed by BYM President Dalyop Mwantiri and Secretary-General Bature Adazaram, the group accused the attackers of using false allegations of cattle rustling and attacks on herders as pretexts to justify violence against Berom communities.
“The Fulani attackers fabricated claims that Kwi natives attacked their cows, but after thorough investigation, no evidence of such incident has been found. These lies are part of a consistent pattern used to cover up premeditated assaults,” the statement read.
The BYM further alleged that certain individuals, including a “security expert” active on social media, have been spreading misleading narratives to portray the attackers as victims.
The group also expressed worry over what it described as a disturbing trend where violent incidents often follow peace or security meetings between Berom and Fulani representatives. It recalled a recent case where community and youth leaders were ambushed after leaving a security meeting at the Sector 4 Headquarters, resulting in four deaths, two injuries, and two missing persons.
Appealing to security authorities, the association urged the Joint Task Force, Operation Enduring Peace (OPEP), particularly Sector 4, to take swift and decisive action by investigating and arresting those responsible for making false reports that trigger attacks.
“The Berom Youths Moulder Association calls on Sector 4 of Operation Enduring Peace to deploy all professional and operational means to bring to justice those behind these false claims and recurring assaults,” the statement added.
The BYM warned that the killings would continue unless authorities dismantle identified militant hideouts in Fass and other neighboring areas. Promote Your Brand on SpringNewsNG Nigeria!
