Peter Obi Mocks Tinubu: “He Promised to Continue Buhari’s Legacy, Now Dollar Hits N1,500 from N400”

By Tinubu Has Done What He Promised; Met One Dollar At N400 And Pushed It To N1500 – Peter ObibSprings News NG, March 14, 2025

Former Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections, Peter Obi, has taken a swipe at President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, sarcastically commending him for fulfilling his promise to “continue where former President Muhammadu Buhari stopped.”

Obi made this statement during his visit to Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, on Thursday, where he criticised the current state of Nigeria’s economy, highlighting the rising inflation, currency depreciation, and skyrocketing costs of essential goods.

Obi lamented how the naira, which was exchanged at N400 to a dollar during Buhari’s administration, has now hit N1,500 under Tinubu’s leadership. He also pointed out that the price of rice has risen from N40,000 to over N100,000, while fuel has surged from N300 to over N1,000 per litre.

“Tinubu promised to continue from where Buhari stopped, and truly, he has done exactly that. Everything has doubled and tripled. The dollar was N400, now it’s N1,500. Rice was N40,000, now over N100,000. Fuel was N300, now over N1,000. This is exactly the continuation he promised,” Obi stated.

Drawing a comparison between Nigeria and Indonesia, Obi explained that while Indonesia’s GDP grew from $800 billion to $1.3 trillion and its per capita income rose from $3,000 to $5,000 within ten years, Nigeria’s GDP fell from $500 billion to $200 billion, and per capita income dropped from $3,500 to below $2,000 within the same period.

Obi stressed the need for industrial revitalization, investment in education and healthcare, and a shift towards productive governance. He also urged Nigerians to abandon ethnic and religious politics and instead focus on electing competent and capable leaders.

“We want a Nigeria where the child of nobody can become somebody. We must end the elite conspiracy that uses tribalism and religion to divide us. We have voted for tribe and religion before, now let’s vote for competence and capacity,” Obi added.

Obi revealed that his meeting with Governor Bala Mohammed was part of a broader discussion on finding solutions to Nigeria’s economic and social challenges.

“We have just started discussions. You can’t consummate a marriage in one day. But the most important thing is that our thoughts are centered on issues that affect the ordinary Nigerian,” he concluded.
