NASU Rejects 30% Allowance Offer, Warns of Nationwide Strike

The Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) has rejected the Federal Government’s proposed 30 percent increase in consolidated allowances, describing it as insufficient and warning of a possible nationwide strike.
Speaking at a union meeting held at Lagos State University, NASU General Secretary Peters Adeyemi said the union is demanding a 40 percent increment—similar to what was approved for academic staff—and has given the government a deadline of May 1.
Adeyemi stressed that non-academic staff play a critical role in the functioning of universities, warning that failure to meet their demands could disrupt the entire system.
“We are asking for fairness. Granting 40 percent will ensure stability on campuses. Anything short of that may force us to shut down operations,” he said.
Also speaking, NASU Deputy President Buhari Suleiman called on the government to urgently address broader issues affecting the education sector, including poor funding, infrastructure deficits, and unfulfilled agreements. He added that rising economic hardship and insecurity require immediate attention.
At the branch level, LASU Chairman Sanni Obafemi commended the university management for prioritising staff welfare and institutional growth, while urging continued unity among union members. He also praised Vice-Chancellor Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello for her leadership in improving the institution’s standing.
NASU warned that if its demands are not met before the deadline, it will take decisive industrial action that could affect universities nationwide.
