A woman identified as Rita Ughale has admitted to fabricating a kidnapping story after selling her two-month-old baby to a couple for ₦1.5 million.

Police from the Ekpan Division in Uvwie Local Government Area, Delta State, arrested the mother along with the buyers, Osas Omijie (39) and Judith Omijie (30). The baby was safely recovered and is now in good condition.

All suspects are in police custody as investigations continue, with authorities seeking additional accomplices.

Delta State Police spokesperson SP Bright Edafe provided details in a statement on Friday.

The statement explained that on December 15, 2025, around 6:40 p.m., Rita Ughale reported to Ekpan Police Division that her infant was snatched from her during a robbery while she was riding in a tricycle in Kokori, Ethiope East Local Government Area.

The Divisional Police Officer, CSP Labe Joseph, quickly mobilized a team for a search and rescue mission.

As detectives probed the case, discrepancies in the mother’s account and her behavior raised red flags, leading to deeper questioning.

She eventually confessed that the abduction was a hoax and that she had deliberately sold the two-month-old baby to Osas and Judith Omijie for ₦1,500,000.

The suspects were apprehended, and the child was rescued unharmed. Investigations are ongoing to track down any other individuals involved for prosecution.
