Chevron Strikes Major Oil and Gas Condensate Discovery Offshore Angola

Chevron has announced a major oil and gas condensate discovery offshore Angola, with its latest exploration well encountering more than 2,000 feet of hydrocarbon column and over 300 feet of net pay.
The discovery was made at the 105-4X exploration well in Block 0, operated by Chevron’s wholly owned subsidiary, Cabinda Gulf Oil Company Limited.
According to Chevron, the well encountered more than 2,000 feet of oil and gas condensate column, with the reservoir demonstrating what the company described as “excellent” quality.
Chevron has not yet disclosed an estimate of recoverable resources or the potential production capacity of the discovery.
“The early results are encouraging, and additional work will help determine the resource’s full potential and possible development opportunities,” said Kevin McLachlan, Chevron’s vice president of exploration.
The discovery strengthens Chevron’s position in the Lower Congo Basin, one of Africa’s established petroleum provinces where the energy company has operated for decades.
Chevron said it will now assess the possibility of developing the discovery using nearby existing infrastructure. A potential tie-back to existing facilities could reduce development costs and accelerate production compared with constructing a standalone offshore project.
The latest discovery also builds on recent developments in Block 0. Chevron’s South N’dola Platform delivered first oil in December 2025, slightly more than two years after construction began.
The Angola find forms part of Chevron’s broader exploration drive across Sub-Saharan Africa. The company currently produces approximately 300,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day net across the region and has strengthened its position through new acreage and exploration successes, including projects in Nigeria.
Further exploration activity is planned in Namibia, Nigeria, Guinea-Bissau and Equatorial Guinea.
“Every successful well adds information, confidence and potential pathways for future growth,” McLachlan said.
For Chevron, the next priority will be determining the full size and recoverability of the discovery. However, the combination of a substantial hydrocarbon column, significant net pay and access to existing infrastructure could make the 105-4X discovery an important addition to the company’s Angolan portfolio.
