Speaking after casting his vote at Polling Unit 007, Ward 9, Rumuepirikom Kingdom in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, Wike commended residents for turning out in large numbers to participate in the exercise.
“I want to thank RSIEC for successfully conducting this local government election. Turnout varies depending on location. In commercial areas, you don’t expect large crowds, but in residential areas, you naturally see more participation. From my observation and the reports I’ve received, the response has been encouraging,” he told journalists.
The minister noted that Rivers people were excited to take part in choosing their local representatives, especially following the Supreme Court’s ruling that nullified previous arrangements.
“There was no election before now because the Supreme Court said so. Today, we are witnessing a proper election in line with the law, and that’s why people are turning out to vote,” he said.
Wike emphasized that with the election in place, local governments are now positioned to receive funds directly from the Federation Account, as directed by the Supreme Court.
“The successful conduct of this election will help stabilize governance at the grassroots. We must thank Mr. President for ensuring this process took place. Without elected local officials, funds would not be released, and governance at that level would remain crippled,” he added.
He maintained that the outcome of the election would guarantee functional local administration, especially when the emergency rule in the state ends in September.
“By then, the governor and state assembly will return, and with elected local government leaders in place, the system will be complete,” Wike said.
