Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has shed light on how President Bola Tinubu emerged victorious in Rivers State during the 2023 presidential election, saying the outcome was largely decided by the support of the Ikwerre people.
Wike made the remarks on Sunday during his Christmas outreach visit to Emohua and Ikwerre local government areas of Rivers State. He stated that votes from Ikwerre communities formed the backbone of Tinubu’s success in the state at a time when many Nigerians were still uncertain about the president’s chances.
According to Wike, his political camp stood firmly with Tinubu when the contest was most difficult, taking what he described as a calculated political risk. He criticised individuals he referred to as “latecomers” who are now publicly pledging loyalty using the slogan “On your mandate, we shall stand,” saying such displays do not reflect genuine commitment.
He argued that real political support is shown during challenging periods, not after victory has been secured. Wike insisted that changing slogans or aligning late with the winning side does not erase the realities of who stood firm when it mattered most.
Addressing the Ikwerre community, Wike reminded them of the courage it took to support Tinubu in 2023, stressing that their votes were instrumental in delivering Rivers State to the president. He said true loyalty is proven when the odds are high, not when success is already guaranteed.
The FCT minister also spoke on the future of southern politics, insisting that the South must be allowed to complete eight years in power through President Tinubu, regardless of party affiliation. He urged Nigerians to rally behind the president to ensure a successful tenure.
Wike added that the South would collectively decide its next political direction after 2031, when Tinubu is expected to complete his second term.
