VP Shettima Returns to Nigeria After Representing Tinubu at UNGA 81 in New York

Vice President Kashim Shettima has returned to Nigeria after representing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and leading the country’s delegation to the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA 81) in New York, United States.
Shettima departed Abuja on September 20, 2026, following President Tinubu’s mandate to lead Nigeria’s delegation to the annual high-level global gathering. He returned to Abuja on Monday, September 28. �

During the General Debate, the Vice President delivered President Tinubu’s National Statement, in which Nigeria renewed its call for reform of the United Nations Security Council, including permanent African representation. Nigeria also advocated fairer global financing, stronger climate support and deeper multilateral cooperation. �

Shettima also participated in the Third High-Level Roundtable of the Africa Minerals Strategy Group, where Nigeria pushed for African countries to move beyond exporting raw minerals and focus on processing, manufacturing and value addition.
At a high-level education financing event co-hosted by Nigeria and Italy, Shettima reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to education and supported the Global Partnership for Education’s $5 billion financing campaign.
The Vice President also engaged with Nigerians in the Diaspora, highlighting the importance of their investments, expertise and networks to Nigeria’s development. He held further meetings with the leadership of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Commission and United Nations Deputy Secretary-General Amina J. Mohammed. �
