President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has returned to Abuja after completing a two-week high-level diplomatic tour of Japan and Brazil aimed at deepening Nigeria’s international partnerships.
The Nigerian leader first traveled to Japan, where he attended the Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD9). From there, he proceeded to Brazil on a state visit focused on strengthening bilateral relations with South America’s largest economy.
Tinubu’s aircraft touched down at the Presidential Wing of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, at exactly 1:30 a.m. on Thursday, August 28, 2025. He was received by top government officials, including Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, and senior members of the diplomatic corps.
During his stay in Brazil, President Tinubu held strategic talks with Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, where both leaders witnessed the signing of five Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) between Nigeria and Brazil. The agreements cover critical sectors such as energy, agriculture, aviation, security, foreign affairs, and science and technology—all aligned with Nigeria’s economic transformation agenda.
Brazil accorded President Tinubu full military honours upon arrival at the Palácio do Planalto in Brasília. A guard of honour, led by Colonel Cel Nicolas, marked the ceremonial reception.
In a statement, Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, confirmed that the presidential jet departed Brasília International Airport Air Force Base at 12:57 p.m. local time before landing in Abuja.
The successful diplomatic engagements, analysts say, are expected to open fresh opportunities for foreign investment, trade partnerships, and technology exchange between Nigeria, Japan, and Brazil.
