Northwest Governors Declare Tuesday Public Holiday to Honour Late President Muhammadu Buhari

The Northwest Governors Forum has declared Tuesday, July 15, 2025, a public holiday across all seven states in the region to honour the late former Nigerian President, Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away on Sunday in a UK hospital after a prolonged illness.
The announcement was made in an official statement by the Forum’s Chairman and Governor of Katsina State, Dikko Umar Radda, who described Buhari’s death as a colossal national loss and a moment of profound sorrow for the region and the country at large.
“The Northwest Governors Forum receives with shock and deep sorrow the news of the passing of our beloved former President, General Muhammadu Buhari, who breathed his last yesterday in the United Kingdom,” Radda said.
Governor Radda praised Buhari as a father figure, patriot, and symbol of integrity, noting that the late president lived a life of selfless service and unwavering dedication to the Nigerian people.
As a mark of respect and solidarity, the Forum unanimously agreed to observe a one-day public holiday across Kano, Katsina, Kaduna, Kebbi, Jigawa, Sokoto, and Zamfara States to enable citizens to mourn and pay tribute to the late elder statesman.
“This gesture reflects the deep reverence we hold for a man who dedicated his entire life to serving Nigeria and humanity,” Radda added.
The Forum also confirmed that Buhari’s remains will be flown to Katsina by 12:00 p.m. on Tuesday, followed by funeral prayers and interment at 2:00 p.m. in Daura, his hometown, in line with Islamic burial rites.
The Governors urged Nigerians to pray for the peaceful repose of Buhari’s soul and to remain united in national grief, emphasizing that his legacy would continue to inspire future generations.
