Nigeria is mourning the loss of one of its most iconic football heroes, Peter Rufai, the former Super Eagles goalkeeper, who passed away on Thursday at the age of 61 after a brief illness.
Widely known by his nickname “Dodo Mayana,” Rufai was a cornerstone of Nigerian football in the 1990s. He played a vital role in Nigeria’s victory at the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) and was the starting goalkeeper during the country’s historic debut at the 1994 FIFA World Cup in the USA. He earned 65 caps for the national team, and in a rare feat for a goalkeeper, scored a goal during a 6–0 win against Ethiopia in 1993.
Confirming his passing, the official Super Eagles X (formerly Twitter) account posted:
“We mourn the passing of legendary Super Eagles goalkeeper, Peter Rufai, a giant of Nigerian football and a 1994 AFCON champion. Your legacy lives on between the sticks and beyond. Rest well, Peter Rufai.”
Rufai’s club career spanned both local and international stages. He played for Dragons de l’Ouémé in Benin Republic, Lokeren and Beveren in Belgium, Go Ahead Eagles in the Netherlands, and Farense and Gil Vicente in Portugal. His reputation for quick reflexes and acrobatic saves made him a fan favorite.
Outside football, Rufai pursued formal education in sports, enrolling at the National Institute for Sports in Lagos, where he trained to become a coach — a testament to his commitment to nurturing future talents.
Prominent Nigerians and football stars have expressed shock and sorrow at his passing.
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar wrote on X:
“His death is a profound loss to the global football community. I extend my heartfelt condolences to his immediate family and the Nigerian football community. May his soul rest in eternal peace.”
Super Eagles forward Ahmed Musa also paid tribute, saying:
“Can’t believe I’m typing this – a post to bid farewell to a true giant of Nigerian football, Peter Rufai. Your heroic reflexes and unwavering presence brought us pride on the world stage. Though you’ve left us, your legacy soars higher than any trophy.”
Peter Rufai’s death coincides with the tragic passing of Liverpool’s Diogo Jota, who died in an accident the same day — making July 4, 2025, a dark day in global football.
Rufai is remembered not just as a goalkeeper, but as a symbol of Nigerian excellence, resilience, and patriotism. His contributions will continue to inspire generations of footballers in Nigeria and beyond.
