The Edo State Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has arrested 54 suspected drug traffickers and seized a total of 1,506.57 kilograms of various narcotic substances during its operations in September.
State Commander of Narcotics, Mitchell Ofoyeju, disclosed this on Tuesday in Benin City while presenting the Command’s monthly operational report.
According to Ofoyeju, the arrested suspects comprised 43 males and 11 females, while six illicit cannabis plantations covering 26.43 hectares were destroyed across several local government areas of the state.
He identified the affected areas as Ugbogui Forest (Ovia South West), Ataroro Forest (Owan West), Urohi Forest (Esan West), and Ogu Forest (Igueben), adding that the destroyed farms were estimated to yield over 66,078.57 kilograms of skunk cannabis.
“The command also intercepted 1,506.57 kilograms of illicit drugs, including 1,502.26kg of cannabis sativa and 4.27kg of psychotropic substances, such as tramadol, nitrazepam, Swinol, Danabol (Molly), methamphetamine, cocaine, and heroin,” he stated.
Ofoyeju reaffirmed the NDLEA’s commitment to dismantling drug trafficking networks and curbing substance abuse in the state, noting that the achievements recorded were part of ongoing strategic operations to ensure safer communities.
He emphasized that the successes represent a critical step toward reclaiming the safety, health, and future of Edo residents, as the command intensifies its fight against the spread of illicit drugs.
