Iran Accuses US of Killing Civilians in Hormuz Boat Strike, Tensions Deepen

Iran has alleged that the United States military killed five civilians after attacking passenger boats in the strategic Strait of Hormuz.
According to Iranian officials, the vessels targeted were not linked to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, contradicting claims by US Central Command that its forces destroyed multiple IRGC boats attempting to disrupt a naval escort mission.
A US commander, Brad Cooper, had earlier stated that several Iranian boats were sunk during the operation, while Donald Trump later suggested the number was even higher. The naval mission, known as “Project Freedom,” was launched to guide stranded commercial vessels through the tense waterway.
Iran’s state media reported that an internal investigation found no IRGC boats were hit. Instead, two small civilian vessels traveling between Oman and Iran were allegedly destroyed, killing five passengers. Tehran has demanded accountability, though Washington has yet to respond officially.
The incident threatens a fragile ceasefire agreed earlier and raises fears of renewed conflict in the region. The crisis has already disrupted global trade, as the Strait of Hormuz—responsible for a significant share of the world’s oil transport—remains partially blocked.
Iran has insisted on maintaining control of the route and imposing transit fees, while senior officials warn that US actions risk worsening instability.
Meanwhile, regional tensions escalated further after the United Arab Emirates reported missile and drone attacks linked to Iran, including a strike that triggered a fire at an oil facility in Fujairah.
Despite the rising conflict, Iran’s Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, said diplomacy remains the only viable path, noting that talks mediated by Pakistan are making progress
