At least 10 persons have reportedly lost their lives, with many others sustaining injuries, following a deadly assault by armed men on Angwan Rukuba in Jos North, Plateau State.

Eyewitnesses said the incident occurred around 8 p.m. on Sunday when over 20 attackers invaded Gari Yawaye, a nearby settlement, unleashing gunfire that caused panic as residents fled for safety.

The attack shattered the relative peace of the area, which accommodates students and staff of the University of Jos.

A local resident who spoke with the press revealed that the assailants were disguised in uniforms resembling those of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA). According to him, the gunmen moved freely on motorcycles, firing indiscriminately.

“They came dressed like NDLEA officials. Shockingly, they even purchased goods from a shop before suddenly opening fire. The shop owner managed to escape, but four others were not so fortunate,” he recounted.

He added that by the time the attackers retreated, at least 10 people had been killed, while several others suffered injuries either from stray bullets or during the chaos of escape.

The resident further lamented the delayed response of security forces, stating that military personnel and other operatives only arrived nearly an hour after the attackers had fled.

Attempts to get official reactions from the police spokesperson, DSP Alfred Alabo, and representatives of Operation Enduring Peace were unsuccessful, as calls to their lines were not answered.
