EU Moves to Roll Out Age-Verification App to Strengthen Online Protection for Children

The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, has announced that the European Union’s long-anticipated age-verification application is now fully developed and will be launched soon as part of wider efforts to safeguard minors online.
Speaking on Wednesday, she said the initiative is designed to address growing concerns about children’s exposure to harmful content and unsafe interactions on digital platforms across the bloc.
Von der Leyen described the situation as alarming, noting that online risks affecting young people are increasing rapidly. She revealed that statistics show significant levels of cyberbullying among minors, with both victims and perpetrators present on social media platforms.
Several EU member states, including France, Denmark, Greece, Italy, Spain, Cyprus, and Ireland, have already indicated plans to integrate the system into their national digital infrastructure.
However, the EU still faces challenges in implementing a unified age-verification framework that complies with strict data privacy regulations while remaining effective across all member states.
The Commission president also raised concerns about the design of modern social media platforms, arguing that features such as endless scrolling, highly personalized algorithms, and short-form video content are contributing to addictive usage patterns among young users.
She called for a coordinated European strategy to better protect children online, adding that a panel of experts will present policy recommendations later this summer.
