CAF Restores Biennial AFCON, Reverses Four-Year Plan
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has reversed its earlier plan to hold the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) every four years, restoring the tournament’s traditional two-year cycle.
The CAF Executive Committee unanimously approved the change, citing the need to protect the interests of African football, its 54 member associations and African players competing abroad.
The next AFCON will be held in 2027 across Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda, followed by editions scheduled for 2028, 2031 and 2033. CAF said there will be no AFCON in 2030 because of the FIFA World Cup.
