Troops under the Operation Hadin Kai Joint Task Force have successfully repelled coordinated attacks by insurgents linked to Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) on four communities in Borno State, killing several militants and forcing others to retreat.

The assaults targeted military formations in Konduga, Marte, Jakana, and Mainok between about 10:30 p.m. Thursday and 3:00 a.m. Friday, according to a statement released by the spokesman of the Joint Task Force, Sani Uba.

The military said the terrorists launched a series of coordinated attempts to overwhelm troops’ defensive positions. However, soldiers on ground reportedly held their positions despite prolonged and intense gun battles that lasted several hours.

“In a swift and coordinated counteroffensive, troops carried out simultaneous flanking manoeuvres with reinforcement teams from Sectors 1 and 2, successfully repelling the attackers and forcing them to retreat in disarray,” the statement said.

Military authorities noted that although parts of the defensive perimeter were briefly breached in some locations, troops quickly mounted counterattacks and restored full control of their positions.

During the clashes, several insurgents, including some of their commanders known as “Amirs,” were killed, while others fled with injuries.

The air component of the Nigerian Air Force also conducted targeted overnight strikes on retreating fighters and suspected terrorist hideouts, destroying hostile positions and weakening the militants’ operational capacity.

Troops have since launched follow-up operations in the affected areas, recovering the bodies of slain insurgents, weapons, and other combat materials.

Despite the successful defence of the bases, the military confirmed that the operation recorded casualties among its ranks.

According to the statement, several soldiers lost their lives in the fierce fighting, including a senior officer who reportedly led his troops from the frontline during the battle.

“Sadly, a number of brave soldiers paid the ultimate sacrifice in defence of the nation, including a courageous officer who led from the front during the engagement,” the military said.

Some structures within the military facilities were also damaged during the exchange of fire, though the military emphasized that all bases remain firmly under its control.

Authorities described the failed attacks as evidence of increasing pressure on insurgent groups as ongoing military operations continue across the North-East region.
