Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, has called on the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Amupitan, to ensure transparency and fairness in the upcoming governorship election in Anambra State.
Speaking to journalists over the weekend after attending a Labour Party campaign rally in Nnewi alongside the party’s candidate, Dr. George Moghalu, Obi emphasized the importance of credibility and neutrality in the electoral process.
He urged the new INEC boss to conduct an election that reflects the genuine will of the people, warning that his actions in office will define his legacy and the reputation of his family in the years to come.
“Our hope is that with the new INEC chairman, we can begin a new chapter of free, fair, and credible elections. I appeal to Prof. Amupitan to discharge his duties with integrity and remember that history will judge him. What matters most is doing what is right,” Obi said.
The former governor of Anambra also confirmed his intention to contest the 2027 presidential election, clarifying recent speculation about his political alignment.
“I remain a member of the Labour Party. I only participated in the broader ADC coalition discussions ahead of 2027, but my party is Labour, and my candidate in this election is Dr. George Moghalu,” he stated.
Obi also expressed concern over the harsh tone of the Anambra campaign, calling on all candidates to focus on issues rather than personal attacks.
“I’ve spoken with some of our members to ensure campaigns are issue-based. All those contesting are my friends — there’s no need for insults. Let the people judge the candidates and vote according to their conscience,” he added.
