Amaechi Quits APC, Labels Ruling Party a Symbol of Failure and Pain

Former Minister of Transportation and two-term Governor of Rivers State, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, has officially resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC), denouncing the ruling party as a symbol of “failure, pain, and anguish.”
In a resignation letter dated July 1, 2025, and addressed to the Chairman of the APC in Ward 8, Ubima, Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers State, Amaechi accused the party of losing direction and abandoning the ideals on which it was founded.
Amaechi wrote, “After wide-ranging consultations, I am convinced that this is the appropriate moment to resign from the APC. The party has completely derailed from the lofty ideals that inspired its formation and can no longer be trusted to deliver hope or a better future for Nigeria.”
He added, “The APC has become a party of failure, pain, and anguish, with no empathy for the suffering masses. I have, therefore, taken the decision to join forces with patriotic Nigerians to rescue our dear nation from the fangs of this broken system.”
This latest development confirms Amaechi’s earlier declaration that he is no longer a member of the APC, stating that “the APC no longer exists” in its original form and vision.
Amaechi, a founding member of the APC and a major figure in President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration, played a key role in the party’s rise to power in 2015 and 2019. However, in recent years, he has distanced himself from the leadership and direction of the party under President Bola Tinubu.
He is now one of the frontline leaders in the emerging opposition coalition seeking to unseat President Tinubu’s administration in the 2027 general elections. His resignation is seen as a significant blow to the APC’s standing in the South-South geopolitical zone, particularly in Rivers State.
Political analysts suggest that Amaechi’s exit may signal growing cracks within the ruling party, as more senior figures express dissatisfaction with the direction of the government.
As the build-up to the 2027 elections intensifies, Amaechi’s defection could reshape alliances and deepen the opposition’s strength in challenging the APC’s dominance at the federal level.
