Kanam, Plateau State — The Shuwaka community in Garga District, Kanam Local Government Area of Plateau State, has been thrown into mourning following the gruesome murder of its traditional leader, Mallam Hudu Barau, who was kidnapped by suspected bandits last week.
According to the Kanam Development Association (KADA), the village head’s remains were discovered six days after his abduction in Wanka Forest, a known hideout of armed groups operating in the area.
In a statement jointly signed by the Chairman, Shehu Kanam, and Secretary, Garba Aliyu, the association condemned the killing, describing it as a stark reminder of the worsening security crisis in Kanam and across Plateau State.
“The people of Garga and neighboring villages are living under constant fear, while bandits operate freely in the forests,” the statement said. “Our leaders, both at the state and federal levels, have abandoned us to our fate despite repeated cries for help.”
KADA also criticized elected representatives from the area, accusing them of neglecting their constituents in the face of persistent kidnappings, killings, and raids by armed Fulani militias.
The association demanded urgent intervention from Governor Caleb Mutfwang, calling for a declaration of a state of emergency in Garga District and the deployment of additional security forces to flush out criminal elements.
“The silence of leaders in the face of these atrocities will no longer be tolerated. The government must act now to restore peace and stability,” KADA warned, pledging to stand with the bereaved family of the late Sarkin Shuwaka while continuing to fight for justice and safety.
The killing adds to the growing list of violent attacks in Plateau State, where rural communities remain vulnerable to recurring assaults by heavily armed groups.
