As Nigeria prepares for the 2027 general election, former Minister of Transportation and ex-Governor of Rivers State, Rotimi Amaechi, has pledged to serve only one term if elected president, citing respect for Nigeria’s unwritten North-South power rotation agreement.
Speaking on Politics Today on Channels Television on Thursday, Amaechi declared his support for the traditional power-sharing formula between northern and southern Nigeria and affirmed that a four-year presidency would be in the national interest.
“Of course, I told you. You know I speak my mind. If I won’t do more than four years, I would say so. If I were to do more than four years, I would also say it,” Amaechi said when asked if he would accept a single-term offer under the platform of the newly-formed African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Amaechi emphasized the importance of maintaining the unwritten agreement, which has shaped presidential transitions in Nigeria since 1999. He referenced the current rotation, noting that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu from the South-West succeeded Muhammadu Buhari from the North-West, who served for eight years.
“For now, the way Nigeria is, you must keep to that agreement—unwritten agreement—that says South eight years, North eight years,” Amaechi reiterated.
The ADC, a rising political coalition attracting prominent politicians, has not officially zoned its 2027 presidential ticket. However, with Amaechi’s public stance, pressure may mount on the party to consider a southern candidate willing to serve a transitional one-term presidency to uphold national balance.
Debates around power rotation, regional equity, and political zoning have taken center stage ahead of the 2027 elections. Amaechi’s position may further shape political alignments in the months to come
