The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has signalled its readiness to offer Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, the party’s governorship ticket for the 2027 election should he decide to join its ranks.

This assurance was given by the Chairman of the PDP Board of Trustees (BoT), Senator Adolphus Wabara, while speaking on the governor’s political future and the party’s preparations ahead of the next general elections.

Wabara described Otti as a strong political figure whose performance in office has won admiration beyond party boundaries, noting that the PDP would be willing to support him for a second term if he defects.

He made the remarks on Sunday in Umuahia during the presentation of the Abia State Government’s 25-Year Development Plan, an event attended by political leaders, key stakeholders, and development partners.

According to Wabara, Governor Otti’s achievements in office have made him attractive to multiple political parties, adding that performance and effective governance now carry more weight than party labels.

He said the increasing interest in the governor across different platforms reflects the visible progress recorded under his administration.

The former Senate President also disclosed that the PDP is currently undergoing internal reforms aimed at rebuilding confidence and strengthening the party ahead of the 2027 elections. He explained that the party’s leadership is focused on restructuring and repositioning the PDP as a credible and appealing platform for aspirants.

Wabara further noted that the South-East remains a traditional stronghold of the PDP, adding that Otti’s potential defection would significantly boost the party’s presence and influence in the region.

Commending the Abia 25-Year Development Plan, Wabara described it as a well-thought-out roadmap capable of driving long-term transformation if properly implemented. He praised the governor’s efforts in infrastructure development, healthcare, education, industrial growth, and security.

He also applauded the introduction of electric buses for urban transportation, noting that the initiative would reduce hardship and improve mobility for residents.

Wabara stressed that good governance should rise above party considerations, saying that as an elder statesman, he has a responsibility to acknowledge performance wherever it occurs.

He recalled earlier criticisms he faced for praising the reconstruction of the Port Harcourt Road in Aba, stating that the visible results have since justified his stance.

Wabara further encouraged Governor Otti to seriously consider joining the PDP, citing internal leadership challenges within the Labour Party. He argued that the PDP offers a stronger national structure and broader reach, which would be essential in navigating political pressures ahead of the 2027 elections.

According to him, a party with nationwide spread and resilience, such as the PDP, would better position the governor to withstand intimidation and remain politically competitive.
