The Zamfara State Government has appealed to the Medical and Health Workers Union of Nigeria (MHWUN) to suspend its planned strike action in the interest of public health, citing the ongoing cholera outbreak in the state.
State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Nafisa Mohammed Maradun, made the appeal in a statement on Wednesday, emphasizing that protecting the lives of citizens remains the administration’s top priority.
Dr. Maradun acknowledged the concerns raised by the union but called on its members to embrace dialogue rather than industrial action, especially at a time when urgent medical attention is needed to contain the spread of cholera across communities.
She explained that the government had already implemented a salary increase for some categories of health professionals as part of efforts to motivate workers, adding that discussions were still ongoing to review remuneration for all health workers in the state.
“It is disheartening that the union has chosen to consider a strike at a time when our collective focus should be on saving lives from cholera,” Maradun stated.
The commissioner further assured that the state government is committed to providing medical supplies, free drugs at the Infectious Disease Hospital, and improved water and sanitation services to affected areas. She reaffirmed that the Ministry of Health remains open to dialogue with MHWUN and other unions to resolve all outstanding issues peacefully.
