Yoruba Nation youth leaders have strongly condemned Nigerian Vice President Kashim Shettima’s recent suggestion that Kemi Badenoch, the UK Conservative Party leader, should remove “Kemi” from her name. They argue that the name is a vital symbol of her Yoruba heritage and identity.

In a joint statement issued by prominent youth figures Prophet Ayodele Ologunloluwa and Comrade Oyegunle Oluwamayowa Omotoyole, the leaders praised Badenoch for her vocal stance against corruption and her outspoken opposition to violent acts, particularly those committed by Fulani herdsmen and Boko Haram, which have led to kidnappings and attacks in Yoruba communities across the Southwest.

The leaders emphasized Badenoch’s courage and integrity, noting her tireless advocacy for justice and greater accountability in Nigeria’s governance. “Her name is a source of pride for all Yoruba people, and any attempt to undermine it is unacceptable,” the statement declared.

The youth leaders called on Yoruba youths to rally behind figures like Badenoch, who exemplify strong values and serve as role models. They also reiterated their commitment to protecting Yoruba interests and fostering unity in the face of regional violence and injustice.

Furthermore, the statement conveyed a direct message to Vice President Shettima, urging him to focus on the urgent issues facing Nigeria, such as the faltering economy, rampant kidnappings, and ineffective leadership, rather than distracting attention with cultural and personal matters.

“We implore you to cease critiques of Kemi Badenoch, as her observations resonate with the stark realities faced by our people,” the leaders asserted. “As a proud daughter of Yoruba heritage, she stands in solidarity with our cause and has no allegiance to the violent narratives fostered by extremist groups, including Boko Haram.”

The statement also emphasized that “Kemi” is more than just a name; it is a cherished representation of the Yoruba people’s identity and cultural pride. The leaders highlighted the cultural divides between the Yoruba and Northern communities, asserting that these divisions present significant challenges to Nigeria’s unity.

In conclusion, the Yoruba Nation Youth leaders reaffirmed their commitment to mutual respect and dialogue, while advocating for a future that recognizes and celebrates Nigeria’s diverse heritages.
