World Cup Playoffs: Pressure Mounts on Nwabali as Fans Call for Okoye to Take Over Super Eagles’ Goalkeeping Role

As Nigeria gears up for the 2026 FIFA World Cup playoffs, calls have intensified for Udinese goalkeeper Maduka Okoye to replace Stanley Nwabali of Chippa United as the Super Eagles’ first-choice goalkeeper.

The Super Eagles are scheduled to face Gabon in the semi-final clash of the playoffs on Thursday, November 13, 2025, in Rabat, Morocco. The victor will advance to meet the winner between Cameroon and DR Congo for a spot in the intercontinental play-offs.

However, Nwabali’s form in recent matches has raised eyebrows. The goalkeeper has faced criticism for inconsistent performances, poor decision-making under pressure, and visible emotional outbursts during games.

The 29-year-old nearly got sent off in Nigeria’s 1-0 win over Rwanda after being booked for time-wasting and committing a late foul that escaped punishment due to the absence of VAR. Against Lesotho, he was at fault for a late goal after Nigeria had built a comfortable 2-0 lead.

His clash with teammate Calvin Bassey during halftime in Nigeria’s 4-0 win over Benin Republic also sparked concerns about his temperament.

Former Super Eagles defender Sam Sodje advised head coach Eric Chelle to act decisively if Nwabali’s attitude or form poses a risk to Nigeria’s qualification hopes.

“When you have players like Stanley, there’s a thin line between confidence and arrogance,” Sodje said. “If the coach feels he might cost us the World Cup, it’s better to make the change now before it’s too late.”

In contrast, Maduka Okoye has impressed for Udinese, keeping a clean sheet in their 1-0 win over Atalanta last weekend. The 26-year-old, who recently returned from a two-month suspension linked to a betting investigation, is seen as a calmer and more composed option.

His standout display against Russia in a friendly last June, played in the intimidating Luzhniki Stadium, highlighted his ability to handle pressure situations—something critics say Nwabali currently lacks.

Veteran journalist Femi Fabunmi told DAILY POST that while Okoye’s recent form is commendable, drastic changes ahead of the playoffs might be risky.

“Okoye has been solid lately, but we shouldn’t rush to replace Nwabali before such crucial matches,” Fabunmi cautioned. “He can be gradually integrated—maybe through friendlies or less competitive games. The AFCON in December could be a better time for that.”
