World Bank Calls for Overhaul of Nigeria’s Trade System to Reduce Widespread Poverty

The World Bank has urged Nigeria to implement a comprehensive restructuring of its trade policies to effectively tackle the rising levels of poverty across the country. According to the institution, Nigeria’s current trade framework limits economic growth, restricts opportunities for local industries, and widens the income gap for millions of citizens.
The Bank noted that Nigeria must prioritise open, transparent, and competitive trade practices to boost productivity, attract investment, and strengthen regional commerce. It added that reforms such as streamlined import procedures, improved export infrastructure, and elimination of trade-distorting barriers are critical to unlocking Nigeria’s full economic potential.
Experts from the institution emphasised that a stronger trade environment would support job creation, enhance market access for small businesses, and provide Nigerians with more affordable goods. They stressed that without significant adjustments, the country may continue to struggle with slow economic recovery and persistent poverty rates.
The World Bank reaffirmed its commitment to working with Nigerian authorities to design policies that promote inclusive growth and sustainable development.
