Wolves and Ipswich in Race to Sign Kelechi Iheanacho on Loan from Sevilla
Kelechi Iheanacho, the former Leicester City forward now plying his trade at Sevilla, has reportedly caught the attention of two Premier League clubs as the January transfer window nears its end. Wolverhampton Wanderers and Ipswich Town are said to be leading the chase for the Nigerian international, who is facing a challenging stint in Spain.
Having left Leicester City on a free transfer after helping the Foxes secure promotion back to the Premier League in the 2023-24 season, Iheanacho joined Sevilla with high expectations. However, the 28-year-old has struggled to find form in La Liga, going without a goal or assist in 401 minutes across nine appearances. His last significant outing came in a 45-minute cameo against Celta Vigo on December 14.
Sevilla, now reportedly willing to part ways with Iheanacho on a loan deal, have opened the door for interested clubs. Wolverhampton Wanderers and Ipswich Town have entered preliminary discussions, with both teams keen to strengthen their attacking options.
For Wolves, Iheanacho’s Premier League experience and versatility could provide a much-needed boost in their battle to escape the relegation zone. With manager Vítor Pereira exploring tactical tweaks, including a potential two-striker system alongside Jorgen Strand Larsen, Iheanacho’s skill set could prove invaluable. However, he would need to compete for regular starts, potentially adopting a deeper role as a number 10.
Ipswich Town, meanwhile, are also weighing up their options. Currently bolstering their squad with Aston Villa winger Jaden Philogene, the Tractor Boys may hesitate to proceed with a move for Iheanacho, given their existing attacking options.
Despite his lackluster spell in Spain, Iheanacho remains an attractive prospect for clubs seeking attacking reinforcements. With his Sevilla contract running until 2026 and an option for a one-year extension, any suitor will likely view a loan deal as a low-risk opportunity to assess his fit before committing long-term.
As the clock ticks down on the January transfer window, Wolves appear the most likely destination for Iheanacho. A move back to England could offer the Nigerian forward the regular first-team football he craves and a chance to rediscover his form in familiar territory.
