Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has taken a swipe at Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, over claims that some key supporters of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar are now backing President Bola Tinubu.

Governor Fubara had stated at a New Year banquet in Port Harcourt that notable political figures, including Prince Uche Secondus, Rt. Hon. Austin Opara, Senator Abiye Sekibo, and former governor Sir Celestine Omehia, were now aligned with him and President Tinubu.

Reacting to the comment, Wike dismissed the political relevance of the individuals mentioned, arguing that they failed to secure even 10 per cent of votes for Atiku during the 2023 presidential election.

Speaking on Friday in Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni (ONELGA) Local Government Area of Rivers State, Wike pledged full political support for President Tinubu ahead of the 2027 presidential contest.

“I heard someone say that those who supported Atiku are now back,” Wike said. “They couldn’t deliver 10 per cent for Atiku in 2023, so what exactly is the political value?”

He added that although he would not mention names, the political actors in question were well known, stressing that efforts would be intensified to ensure President Tinubu receives overwhelming support in future elections.

Wike also responded to remarks by the President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, John Mbata, who allegedly described him as a semi-illiterate.

According to Wike, he ordinarily would not have reacted, but felt compelled to set the record straight. He said the critic had dropped out of Rivers State University while studying law, whereas he completed his education at the University of Port Harcourt, proceeded to law school, and is today a Life Bencher.

“The so-called semi-illiterate,” Wike added, “is a recipient of Nigeria’s fourth-highest national honour.”
