Victor Osimhen Faces Backlash in Turkey Over Alleged Tactical Suspension Ahead of AFCON

Super Eagles forward Victor Osimhen is under scrutiny in Turkey following claims that he deliberately received a suspension ahead of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The Napoli star, expected to join the Nigerian national team soon, picked up his fourth yellow card in Saturday’s Süper Lig clash against Antalyaspor, having previously been booked in matches against Beşiktaş, Kocaelispor, and Fenerbahçe.

The booking in the 85th minute means Osimhen will miss his club’s next fixture against Kasımpaşa. As he is included in Nigeria’s 28-man AFCON squad, the suspension will now be served during the tournament, drawing criticism from Turkish media and fans.

Gazete Gerçek reports that Osimhen could be referred to the Turkish Football Federation Disciplinary Committee (PFDK) for further investigation under Article 37 of the disciplinary code, which addresses players allegedly “intentionally receiving a yellow card.”

If found guilty, Osimhen could face a two-match ban. This could potentially see him miss club fixtures against İstanbul Başakşehir, Kasımpaşa, Fethiyespor, Trabzonspor, and Gaziantep FK, depending on his AFCON involvement
