Sevilla FC sporting director, Victor Orta, has openly admitted that signing Nigerian striker Kelechi Iheanacho was a miscalculation by the Spanish club.

Orta made the statement during the unveiling of Joaquín Caparrós as Sevilla’s new head coach, acknowledging that Iheanacho’s time at the club failed to meet expectations.

Iheanacho joined Sevilla last summer following his exit from Leicester City, where he helped the Foxes win the English Championship. However, the Super Eagles forward failed to make a significant impact in La Liga, scoring just one goal in 11 league appearances, most of which came from the bench. He fared slightly better in the Copa del Rey, netting three times.

After struggling to settle in Spain, Iheanacho has since moved back to England, signing with Middlesbrough in the Championship in search of more consistent playing time.

Reflecting on the club’s transfer decisions, Orta said:

“I want to clarify that the first two strikers were brought in as complements, to be practically the third striker, because there was a starter like Youssef and a striker who later appeared, like Isaac.

But it’s clear that betting on Kelechi this season has been a mistake, and we will analyze why we made it—and we are doing so now.”

Orta’s remarks underline Sevilla’s intention to reassess their recruitment strategies as they look to rebuild ahead of the next season.
