September 2, 2025 – Nigerians traveling to the United States are increasingly facing visa crackdowns, sudden cancellations, and disrupted travel plans as the U.S. government enforces stricter immigration policies under President Donald Trump’s administration.

A source familiar with the situation told BusinessDay that his colleague’s U.S. visa was revoked just before a scheduled trip. “One of my colleagues had his visa cancelled when he was about to travel. I was only fortunate when I visited the U.S. three weeks ago. Since Trump’s return, many Nigerians have been experiencing difficulties with U.S. travel,” he said.

Reports indicate that student visa applications have stalled, with many either denied outright or left pending without updates. The source further alleged that Nigerians whose activities are considered critical of the U.S. government are at risk of abrupt visa cancellations. In some cases, even U.S. citizens accused of certain violations have reportedly been deported or stripped of their citizenship, signaling what he described as “an uncompromising stance” from American authorities.

The tightening of visa rules is already causing concern among Nigerians who depend on U.S. travel for education, medical treatment, business, and family visits. Many have been forced to cancel trips at the last minute, leading to significant financial losses.

Observers warn that the situation could strain Nigeria-U.S. relations, especially in education and business sectors, where thousands of Nigerians engage with American institutions every year. The U.S. Embassy in Nigeria has yet to release an official statement on the issue.
