The United States has reaffirmed its commitment to fighting corruption in Nigeria, declaring that corrupt Nigerian politicians and public officials will face strict visa bans.
In a statement shared on X (formerly Twitter) on Monday, the US Mission in Nigeria emphasized that its anti-corruption stance applies to all individuals, no matter their influence or political status.
“The fight against corruption has no borders and no exceptions. Even top-ranking officials involved in corrupt practices can be denied entry into the United States,” the Mission stated.
This move reinforces Washington’s long-standing policy of using visa restrictions as a tool to discourage graft and financial crimes in Nigeria, a country ranked among the world’s most corruption-challenged nations.
Meanwhile, in the United Kingdom, Reform UK has unveiled a controversial immigration proposal aimed at tightening migration rules. The party announced plans to abolish Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR), replacing it with renewable visas tied to higher salary requirements and stricter English proficiency standards.
Party leader Nigel Farage argued that Britain should not serve as “the world’s food bank,” insisting the policy could save the UK over £230 billion in the long run.
However, Chancellor Rachel Reeves dismissed the claims as unrealistic, noting that the government is already reviewing reforms to limit migrants’ access to welfare benefits.
Current government data from the Department for Work and Pensions shows that more than 213,000 migrants with ILR were claiming Universal Credit benefits as of July 2025.
