US Congressman Riley Moore Blasts Kwankwaso, Accuses Him of Enabling Christian Persecution Through Sharia Law

A member of the United States Congress, Rep. Riley M. Moore, representing West Virginia’s Second District, has strongly criticized former Kano State Governor and 2023 presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, over his remarks denying the alleged genocide of Christians in Nigeria.

Kwankwaso had earlier dismissed reports of targeted attacks on Christians, following Nigeria’s designation as a “Country of Particular Concern” by former US President Donald Trump and the subsequent debate over possible US intervention.

According to Kwankwaso, Nigeria’s insecurity “does not discriminate based on religion, ethnicity, or political beliefs.”

However, in a post on his official X (formerly Twitter) handle, Congressman Moore accused Kwankwaso of hypocrisy, linking him to religious intolerance and violence against Christians during his tenure as governor.

Moore alleged that Kwankwaso’s administration enacted and enforced Sharia law in Kano, which he said included provisions that made blasphemy punishable by death.

“Governor — do you care to comment on your own complicity in the death of Christians?” Moore wrote.
“You instituted Sharia law. You signed the law that makes so-called blasphemy punishable by death.”

The US lawmaker’s post has since stirred widespread reactions on social media, with many Nigerians debating the historical and religious implications of Sharia law in northern states.

Kwankwaso, who served as governor of Kano between 1999–2003 and 2011–2015, has yet to issue a formal response to Moore’s allegations as of press time.
