US Commits $32.5 Million to Tackle Hunger Crisis in Borno, Northern Nigeria

Abuja, Nigeria – The United States has announced a $32.5 million humanitarian package to support food security in northern Nigeria, with a major focus on conflict-ravaged Borno State.
The U.S. Mission to Nigeria said the funding will provide emergency food and nutrition aid to displaced families and vulnerable communities struggling after years of insurgency in the northeast.
According to officials, the intervention will reach over 764,000 people, including more than 41,000 pregnant and breastfeeding women and 43,000 children facing severe malnutrition.
Borno remains the epicenter of Nigeria’s hunger crisis, with aid agencies warning that 1.3 million people could be left without food if urgent action is not taken. Humanitarian workers say at least 150 nutrition clinics risk closure due to lack of resources, leaving facilities like Intersos’ malnutrition center in Maiduguri as the only in-patient option available.
In July, Margot van der Velden, the World Food Programme’s West Africa regional director, cautioned that widespread funding shortages had forced the suspension of food aid in parts of West and Central Africa, threatening millions with starvation.
Northern Nigeria’s food insecurity is compounded by more than a decade of insurgency, which has killed about 35,000 people and displaced over two million, alongside escalating farmer–herder clashes in the northwest and north-central regions.
The U.S. aid package is expected to provide immediate relief, though humanitarian groups stress that long-term solutions addressing insecurity, displacement, and agricultural support remain critical to ending the cycle of hunger in Nigeria’s north.
