At least 23 people have been confirmed dead, while 108 others sustained injuries following coordinated suicide attacks in Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State.

The deadly explosions, which occurred on Monday evening, targeted major public locations including the popular Monday Market, the gate of the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, and the Post Office Flyover. The attacks sent shockwaves across the city, leaving residents in panic as emergency responders rushed to the scenes.

Confirming the incident, Police Public Relations Officer in Borno State, Nahum Daso, said preliminary investigations indicate that suspected suicide bombers carried out the coordinated attacks.

According to him, “A total of twenty-three persons lost their lives, while one hundred and eight others sustained varying degrees of injuries.”

Security operatives, including police tactical units, the military, and other joint forces, were immediately deployed to the affected areas. The locations were secured and cordoned off, while the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team conducted thorough sweeps to prevent further threats.

Victims of the blasts were evacuated by emergency agencies such as National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) to nearby medical facilities, where they are currently receiving treatment.

Reacting to the attacks, the Joint Task Force, Operation Hadin Kai, described the incident as a “cowardly act” allegedly carried out by Boko Haram insurgents to instill fear among residents.

In a statement, the group’s spokesperson, Sani Uba, said security forces responded swiftly and have since intensified surveillance, patrols, and counter-IED operations across the city.

He noted that intelligence reports suggest multiple suicide bombers were deployed into Maiduguri with the aim of attacking crowded areas and causing mass casualties.

The task force also extended condolences to families of the victims and reassured the public of its commitment to protecting lives and property while pursuing those behind the attacks.

Residents have been urged to remain calm but vigilant, avoid crowded places where possible, and report any suspicious movements or objects to security agencies.
