The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has raised fresh concerns over the growing rate of child malnutrition in Nigeria, urging governments, communities, and partners to unite in tackling the crisis.

UNICEF’s Representative in Nigeria, Ms. Wafaa Saeed, made the call following her recent visits to Plateau and Bauchi States, where she engaged with government officials, traditional leaders, parents, and children.

Saeed commended both state governments for demonstrating commitment to child survival and nutrition but stressed that more urgent steps are needed.

“Now is the time to go further, by releasing more funds for nutrition, investing in local food solutions, and scaling up community-driven initiatives already delivering results. If we act with urgency and unity, we can give every child in Nigeria the chance not just to survive, but to truly thrive,” she said.

During her stop in Plateau State, Saeed met with Deputy Governor Josephine Piyo and members of the State Executive Council, where she handed over 5,300 cartons of nutrition supplements expected to reach 15,000 children. She urged the state to swiftly release pledged funds and prioritize investment in locally sourced, nutritious foods.

In Bauchi, Saeed praised Governor Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed for strengthening healthcare infrastructure, from neonatal care units to improved primary health centres. She also highlighted Bauchi’s N300 million contribution to the Child Nutrition Fund (CNF), which UNICEF has pledged to match in order to expand life-saving nutrition interventions for vulnerable children.

Saeed emphasized that the survival of malnourished children depends on timely decisions by government and partners.

“The fight against malnutrition is a race against time. Every naira invested in nutrition today saves lives and secures Nigeria’s future,” she added.
